I love the way you bring in the energy signature. Ann has helped me so much to better understand the power of my own energy. For years it was a mystery to me why people would react and respond to me the ways they did—not always badly—but nevertheless not understood by me.

My voice tone that I get most annoyed with—ironically?—is my annoyed voice. 🙄

“Really? Are you really gonna do that? Huh? Whaaaat?”

It’s my most judgy and my most condescending.

Workin on it every day. 🙏

I hear you about getting annoyed with my own tone of voice! The voice in my head, and its inferred meaning, do not match what comes out of my mouth sometimes. I think perhaps people with a very big energetic field (I don't even know what that is and I don't mean it in a woo-woo way but rather something that is palpable when they are around) often don't recognize it in themselves. It's pretty cool that Ann is helping you see the beauty of it and interesting that it likely comes across in your radio broadcasts.

I find all of this so, so true, Donna. My voice tends to be extremely quiet, and I physically struggle to speak louder the vast majority of the time, especially in groups. But I don’t have any trouble speaking louder around my husband and cats!

As well, anytime I say something negative about someone - even if it’s just to my husband - I’m immediately conscious that it doesn’t feel good and has ripple effects both internally and externally. I fully believe that what we put out comes back to us. Grateful for your voice in the world ❤️

As with everything our voice brings us back to paying attention and making sure that our insides match our outsides! Often the way we talk, and the words we use, go unnoticed and we can't always feel them the way others do so it helps to keep our minds eye there.

(Sorry if this response isn't making sense Dana! I appreciate you taking the time to comment and my mind is mushy today so the words are not coming) ❤️❤️ Wishing you a good week.

Makes complete sense! Appreciate you, Donna! ❤️

I love this, Donna. A clear and beautifully written reminder to be aware of what we are both putting out into the world and telling ourselves.

The sick feeling in the stomach - it's a real thing!! A visceral reminder that my internal and external voices are not reflecting kindness or patience - not aligned with who I believe I am - at least in my very best moments (and I truly hope that I am at my core!).

For me, this negative presence belongs to Helga, a world-weary gal with a cackling crow-voice who I inevitably find sitting on a 1960s chrome and vinyl kitchen chair, forearms resting on a formica tabletop. I always catch her in an old-school housecoat, foam curlers peaking out of a faded floral chiffon kerchief knotted just above her forehead. A cigarette rests on her lower lip, at the edge of her mouth, waiting to be retrieved and waved around when a particularly pointed comment is being made.

This is probably dreadful of me because I'm absolutely sure there have been the kindest souls who would fit that general description. But, for better or worse, there she is, bless her.

Four weeks till the end of school here in Northwestern Ontario!! I am putting a reminder somewhere (on a post-it note attached to my forehead for when I look in the mirror?) about what and how I communicate during the end-of-school-year chaos filling up the hallways, classrooms and offices. It is at this time of year that I really feel the absence of somewhere quiet to breathe and recalibrate. I need to remember that the kids feel it too, the other staff feel that too.

As I write this, I am remembering that there is apparently a nice large storage room at the back of the school. It has no light and is filled with things no longer needed or that don't work. We occasionally joke about hiding there 😅. It always generates a great visual for me: I am picking my way around obstacles in the dark trying to find a quiet place to be, and end up bumping into co-workers on exactly the same mission!

Hmmm, went off on a tangent, didn't I?

Wishes for a peaceful Sunday Donna! I will carry this mindfulness and resolve into the week with me - with the goal of seeing and feeling all the good things. There are many.🥰

I love the visual of Helga, thank you Hil! While there are many gorgeous Helgas in the world, this particular vision perfectly paints the picture of what I'm talking about.

In an alternative Universe you would be able to fix up that storage room, complete with a peaceful mural on the wall and some spa music and smells piped in, so you all have a place to decompress during the school year. But the mops and buckets will have to do. Sending you love as you navigate the coming weeks.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a delightful and insightful comment😘

So much to say here!! First, that piece of art hanging behind you in the photo. I saw it in. Canmore art gallery and immediately wished I lived in that cabin 😁

I 100% agree with everything you've said here. It is SO difficult to catch ourselves in the act, though. I read a book once that said to try going one week without gossiping or saying negative things, and it felt nearly impossible to not give into it. It takes real conscious effort and I have failed many times.

Thanks for this reminder that I should try again!

Yes! Canmore art gallery, you nailed it. This place was filled with art from all the top artists, it was amazing. I wish I knew what lake this was.

Intention counts for a lot and if we can simply be more deliberate with our words, rather than saying whatever shows up in our head in any-old-tone-of-voice I like to think it makes a difference.

You are welcome for the reminder - I only write the things I need for myself!

Next time I go to Canmore, I'll look for the lake name in a gallery. There are SO many galleries there and they're all dog friendly, so we like to browse and pretend we are a cultured human + dog duo 😆

Donna McArthur's avatar

I love those galleries! We can send each other pics from there next time we are in (also in case we are both there at the same time)!

You should just tell me when you're going and I'll drive out 😊

Sounds good!!

Thank you for this. So many things spoke to me. I don’t have a name for the person who sometimes adopts the tone of voice that makes me cringe, but I guess I could call her “hurt Chris.”

This thing about the voice people use with waitstaff. I was just having a conversation with my daughter-in-law about the idea of a year of service as a requirement for being a good citizen and she responded, “and a time required to be a waiter.” It really surprises me, sometimes, when I go out to dinner with people I know and see how they speak to waiters/waitresses. Reveals a lot about them.

Lastly, I have a deep aversion to gossip and tell people that if a person is gossiping to you about someone, you can bet they are also gossiping about you to someone else. I walk away or I say something (more rarely) and whenever I realize my speech has bordered on gossip (there is talking with a trusted friend for advice and trying to process things where the line seems blurry), I feel yucky. But also thankful my body lets me know when my mouth is betraying my soul.

Donna McArthur's avatar

Chris, thank you for this insightful comment. I am sorry it's taken a couple days for me to respond, it's not because I don't appreciate your presence but that I have been off-line for a few days.

Having been a server in restaurants for many years prior to my current career I agree wholeheartedly with this. How we speak to staff in the hospitality industry (or janitorial or so many other careers) speaks volumes about ones true character. Is it possible to get a read into a persons soul with that one interaction? I think the answer might be yes!

I hate it when my mouth betrays me. It happens to all of us. When we are tired, frazzled or triggered it's like we open our mouth and random things we didn't mean pop out. I guess the magic likes in catching ourselves and promising to do better.

❤️❤️

It’s so interesting that your friend was able to maintain a voice that wasn’t hers for such a long time. Even more interesting that after spending an extensive amount of time together in a short burst her facade dissolved.

I really like idea, Donna. We so often hear about how our important our use of words are, but our tone and all those other little things — body language etc — are just as important.

Thanks friend :)

I would love to be a scientist who dissects the why of a changing voice, or at least one that changes in this manner. I think it would have something to do with people pleasing but there's probably much more to it.

Tone of voice is so tricky. I hate it when I catch myself sounding accidentally like a bitch but I don't really mean it. I think it's a lifetime of work for me!

Michael Edward's avatar

Yeah you’ve really got me thinking about tone of voice now. It conveys so much. I can tell so much about how Evie is feeling just from her tone alone. I also find my tone of voice is a dead give away as to how I’m feeling — even when I don’t want it to be hahaha :)

Donna McArthur's avatar

I find this can be both good and bad. While it’s comforting to be able to read our partner from their tone I think it can become easy to infer a story, especially one based on past actions, that might not be acurate in the moment. I have to catch myself from doing that.

Great point! :)

I also know a young woman that does this boice, I’ve always found it odd - and this allows me a way into understanding it, and holding some compassionate space for her to hopefully one day bloom out of it with me too. Thank you

Donna McArthur's avatar

It's interesting isn't it? I admit I don't think I had as much compassion as I should have but I sure was curious as I was constantly wondering why she did it.

Thank you for beingi here Evelyn!

Ha...I am planning my Schitts Creek themed birthday party and in researching highlights, I came across this little gem that Moira Rose shares...."Gossip is the devil's telephone. It is best to just hang up".

Donna McArthur's avatar

This is the best birthday theme ever!! I love it.

Speaking of tone of voice...Alexis nails it! Right? The tone of "Ew, David" will live in the hearts of all Canadians in the best possible way.

Enjoy your fab birthday party Adele🎂🥳
