How To Regain Control of Your Life
the note I wrote to myself

This is a note I’ve written to myself and I’m leaving it here, in full, for my paid subscribers. I also made a short recording for everyone because we ALL need a reminder that the good stuff lies within, no matter what we are going through.
Here’s an audio if you’d rather listen:
It’s how you feel when you know what’s important.
You have clarity and know what direction you’re headed, while at the same time, there’s a softening into accepting what is.
You stop making excuses and just get things done, which means you feel like you’re gaining traction and life is moving forward.
You feel connected to the best part of you, or whatever higher power you put your faith in, and because of that you’re feeling lighter.
Your physical body is less symptomatic and, whatever symptoms appear, you trust that somehow, you’ll be able to cope.
Your mind is clear, and you feel sharp.
Honeybun, this place, this way of being, exists within you.
No matter how long it’s been since you’ve felt this way, I believe it’s possible for you to get back there.
(If you would benefit from a nudge from a friend — that would be me — to hit the reset button on your life then grab a paid subscription for less than the price of a latte. It’s even cheaper by the year!)
You can continue listening if you wish:
Remember that the actions you take throughout the day match up with how you see yourself? Let’s let that one sink in for a minute.
Perhaps you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, sick, distracted, put down by someone else…and all this difficulty is blocking you from vibrating at a higher state (reminder that the word ‘vibrating’ is not airy-fairy but simply a state of your physical, emotion, and spiritual energy at the time).
Maybe you’ve permitted yourself a slow slide into a low-energy state by letting your habits slip so now your life operates at the lowest denominator of your daily routine.
It’s not impossible to think that you’ve got yourself caught up in fear-based media that promotes overwhelm, or maybe you’re locked in a web of distraction which has you satisfying desires that don’t serve your greatest good, or there’s been a gradual sink into chronic grumpiness.
What if you’ve allowed your thoughts to run wild over your whole life and, even worse, you’re believing all those pesky thoughts when most of them aren’t even true.
Worst of all, you may have lost your way by losing sight of what is most important to YOU.
Sweetheart, your deepest and best self is screaming for you to begin again. You, my friend, can do this any time, at any age, under any circumstance. If you choose to keep ignoring the direction you are headed then, at least, make sure you are fully aware of where you are likely to end up. Take a close, hard, look at where your default setting will land you. Is that what you want ten years from now?
What’s that? You don’t like what you see? I get it because I’ve been there. I’ve needed to reset a million times.
The only difference between ending up there, and somewhere completely different, is the line in the sand you draw for yourself - the standard you set and adhere to. You need to give yourself some direction Baby! Figure out approximately where you want to land and draw a bit of a map of how to get there. It doesn’t have to be grandiose or detailed, and you sure as heck don’t have to know for sure if it’s all going to work out. This isn’t about ARRIVING as a fully-put-together-human-being, it’s about elevating the standard you currently hold for yourself and then showing up, a little bit every day, to adhere to your personal code.
Stop cruising through your day in autopilot and take the time to regroup.
Build yourself a framework and review it often. What do you need to learn, what might you need to let go of, what do you need to practice? Change your plan, then revamp it again. Cut yourself some slack when things don’t turn out, while gently reminding yourself that you’re awesome and are able to pick yourself up.
Slowly you will shift. Over time things will click into place and you will feel more and more like the person you aim to be…until the next time you feel lost, and your inner self needs to nudge you towards another reset.
We all know how this is…we find our way only to lose it again. Yet every time we reset our inner compass, we strengthen our self-awareness and increase our capacity to be fully ourselves. I believe there is no greater journey.
xoxo Donna
Question for the comments section: Have you ever drawn a significant line in the sand for yourself where you felt like you almost became a different person? I did that when I quit drinking by setting myself up to BE a happy, non-drinker. That was a good example of taking the time to prepare for a reset, but it doesn’t always work that way. Sometimes it’s a random change or we are backed into a boundary that must be set. I’d love to hear your thoughts because it will help all of us grow.

Yes, about two years ago I drew a line in the sand for myself, which acts as a constant reminder that I can't cross it. I stopped working so many hours in my psychotherapy practice and started devoting time to my writing. it's a line I'm sure I'll never cross
This makes me appreciate that we have agency both ways--whether we live up to our ideals, or not. Either way, it was our choice. We're never a victim of circumstances... even when disappointments and bad luck happen (as they invariably do).
